Fishing Guys Startup

This past summer I started helping with making fishing gear review videos. I loved it. A lot.

I got involved with a video review group and started applying both my video and marketing skills. It was amazing to connect my passion for filming with my passion for fishing. I jumped into the service with both feet and immersed myself into a new form of online marketing and saw some small successes.

After a lot of conversations, hitting a few walls and working through some of my own personal issues of starting something up again, I came up with Fishing Guys.

One of my best fishing buddies, Ryan, and I talk a lot about all things 'life' when we hit the river. We talk about our wives, kids, jobs and general non-sense. I told Ryan about my idea of doing a fishing website and getting more video work and general fishing craziness out there.

I loved Ryan's response to me: 'How much do I need to kick your a$$ to get you to do this?' so with that and my wife saying 'When was the last time you failed at doing something?' (which is her way of saying that I haven't stepped out and tried anything really out there for way too long) I knew what I needed to do.

We've schemed up video ideas, pictures, potential names and logos. We also talked about doing a podcast, something I knew nothing about and have never tried... until now (as of today we have two recorded). It's been a fantastic couple of months putting together new creative channels. To be honest, I feel invigorated and ready for creating more new work. It's been awesome having my wife and close friends right behind and beside me, pushing me onto building something new.

The other really big help in all of this has been my personal coach I've been seeing. I'll be writing about my sessions with her soon and just how awesome she's been, so stay tuned for that. I never knew how useful and insightful having a personal coach could be. She's also been a big proponent behind all of these new endeavours in my life.

That said, Fishing Guys is happening today!! Our official launch of Fishing Guys is happening. A local group of passionate anglers that love to fish, conserve and enjoy the outdoors. Latest local fishing news, gear reviews, podcasts, and fishing trips. Be sure to check out the new site:

Upcoming: ShinShawk

I talk a lot about stupid videos I want to make on my own.

I get so caught up on doing client work. Paid work. And I push my own ideas/projects to the side, thinking that one day I'll get my own stuff done.

That 'one day' never comes.

Until now.

In January I started meeting with a personal coach (a separate post about that is on it's way) and laid out my professional and personal goals for 2014. I've been working towards all of them, but the personal ones have really started to take shape.

In April I'll be launching two personal projects, the first of those upcoming projects is one I have decided to call ShinShawk.

Why ShinShawk?
Good question. I wanted to have a name for my videos to fall under, that had the name 'Hawk' in it. Select nicknames that friends have given me didn't seem to fit too well... HawkBalls, among others, just don't seem to work for what I'm doing with these new videos. I came across the bird, the shin hawk or sharp-shinned hawk, and turned into something for my own use: ShinShawk. I conveniently took a shot block at hockey a few weeks later (see pic).

These videos are going to be various characters myself and friends have created, GoPro videos and other crazy ideas I have been sitting on for two long.

So get ready, ShinShawk is coming soon!

Cheers,
Matthew A. Hawkins

Current Favourite Apps

I'm not much of an app junkie.
I'm not always looking for the latest and greatest, but below are my current go to apps on either my iPhone or iPad.

What are your current favs?

teuxdeux-iPhone.png

1. TeuxDeux
Their purpose, as listed on their site...
The purpose of TeuxDeux is a modest one and one we think we have achieved. We set out to create a to-do list that is: Simple & Beautiful

I use TeuxDeux for just about everything. It takes some work to get into the groove of using it, but I love that I have it synced between all devices and that you can have your day to day to do list, plus extra side to do lists.

2. Kindle Reading App
Part of why I got my iPad last year was for accessibility of books. I'll admit there is nothing like having the real thing in your hands, but to be honest, there are some books you can't track down without ordering online and some of those books are worth a read, but not necessarily ever owning.

Having the Amazon.ca one click purchase is awesome and is pretty cool to have it sync right away with your Kindle app, so you can get reading right away. Not to mention, Amazon is getting more and more comic collections now (nerd moment).

3. GoPro App
I bought a GoPro in the summer to add different shots to my video work. At first I didn't use the GoPro app and I wish I had. Being able to monitor, capture and create videos from your app is so cool. With the GoPro having no playback built on it, being able to see what your recording via WiFi connection is awesome.

I was hesitant to jump on the GoPro train, but with the app alone, I've been very impressed with GoPro and have plans on what I'll be doing with this thing.

I also tried uploading footage from the GoPro to my iPad, then editing in the iMovie app. Fun experience but not something I want to do all the time.

4. Lose It!
With the help of this app I've lost over 40lbs. Sure the app doesn't make you lose weight, but being able to monitor your food intake and daily activity on a simple to use app, sure does help.
Lose It! is FREE and they are constantly making updates. I've been really impressed with this app and having badges for reaching different milestones sure makes it a lot of fun.

5. Feedly
With the death of Google Reader, it was time for something new to rise up. Feedly is an awesome RSS Feed Reader. I was doubtful anything would replace Google Reader, but Feedly has blown away all of my expectations. For one thing, Google Reader never had a good app for the iPad or iPhone, and Feedly has created an awesome reading experience.

Use Feedly on your browser, tablet or smartphone and keep up to date with all your favourite sites. I love that it uses my previous Google Reader feeds, so I didn't even have to migrate anything over. The app also allows you to create different reading 'experiences' or layouts and makes reading from your tablet easy. Flipboard has something similar, in terms of layout, but Feedly is a lot smoother experience and I find much, much easier to get your sites latest info.

What are you current favourite apps?

That Comic Book Catch Phrase for Life

That Comic Book Catch Phrase for Life

superman.jpg

The comic book world has some catch phrases for their characters:

Thor “I say thee NAY!”
The Thing “It’s clobberin’ time!”
Wolverine "I'm the best at what I do, and what I do isn't very nice"
Spiderman "My Spider-Sense is tingling."
Superman "This looks like a job - FOR SUPERMAN."

There is one catch phrase that gets used by heroes and villains alike, and gets very little notice or attention. It's a phrase of determination. It's a phrase of hapless purpose. It doesn't matter your intentions, albeit good nor bad, this catch phrase will work.

It's a perfect catch phrase you can use everyday, whether you want to conquer the world (for good or bad), or lay in bed and watch the world go by. You can let your counterparts (good/bad) know just what they are in for.

"Not Today."

Batman letting Joker his plans to destroy Gotham won't work, Darkseid letting the Justice League know they won't be seeing their loved ones; OR, you want to let procrastination know it won't work, or that you won't let traffic annoy you... try using this comic book catch phrase to get your through it "Not Today."

When you do say it, try it with fists on your hips and chest pushed towards the sky and you'll see just how good that can feel. While you're at it, if you trying calling or texting me to talk, I'll probably just let you know 'Not today, not today.'

What's Your Favorite Comic Book Catch Phrase?

Feature Ad Spots in Canadian Movie Theatres

Feature Ad Spots in Canadian Movie Theatres

In December I pitched a great idea to an amazing client.

I basically asked if they would like to be the last thing a movie theatre audience gets to see right before the movie starts. Their ad would be short, have a movie studio feel to it, great voice over and would play immediately after the previews and right before the feature film.

Regency Chrysler in Quesnel ran this following ad for 3 weeks, on two screens of the Carib Theatres.

I can offer this in any theatre I work with. I love it and know it's effective marketing.
