He got his start in Hollywood by writing scripts. At this time, he was also sharing an apartment with ex-TV Show Heroes star, Greg Grunberg. The two actually spent a lot of time together and Grunberg would come back and star in some of Abrams creations (Alias and the pilot of the plane in Lost).
Some of the scripts Abrams wrote, and they may surprise you, are: Regarding Henry (with Harrison Ford), Gone Fishin' (Danny Glover & Joe Pesci), Forever Young (Mel Gibson), Joy Ride (Paul Walker) and even Armageddon (Bruce Willis, Liv Tyler and Ben Affleck). He was also a producer on most of those films as well.
Abrams was the guy behind the show Felicity, but in my opinion, it wasn't until Alias that Abrams really hit his stride. Off the booming success of Alias, Abrams went on to direct Mission Impossible III, Star Trek and came up with Lost and Fringe. His latest creation, Super 8, looks like something straight out of the awesome classics of movie history past. Abrams teams up Spielberg and they released this trailer today:
